Where Was Troy Filmed? Let’s Know This Historical Flick Closely!

The filming of Troy was done in several parts, in various locations. Since the production budget was quite high, the makers decided to film in some of the best locations in the world. Thus, after selecting the cast members, Petersen asked the production members to scout for ideal filming locations in Mexico, Morocco, and Malta.

After several weeks, the production came up with a list of locations from the above-mentioned countries and submitted it to the director. Wolfgang then conferred with other creative heads of the team and selected a few locations from the list.

In fact, the director added a few locations which he scouted in England, to the same list and instructed the crew to commence shooting. The first phase of filming started in the second week of April 2003 and continued for several months. The final phase of shooting was completed by the end of December of the same year.

The production members ran into minor issues from time to time but managed to stay on top of the shooting dates. The filming schedule remained unchanged for the most part. Now, it’s important to mention that the majority of the outdoor sequences were filmed in Malta and Mexico. Some sequences of the movie were reportedly captured in England as well.

The opening sequence of the movie, where we see the character of Achilles on the battlefield, was actually filmed in Malta. The village of Kalkara, located in the southeastern region of Malta, was primarily used to shoot these sequences. 

The sequences depicting the palace of the Greek King were filmed inside Fort Ricasoli. Special shooting permission had to be acquired from the government of Malta, before capturing the breathtaking scenes inside this historical monument. 

Other pivotal sequences in Malta were captured near Gozo Island and Golden Sands Beach. The production members then used the Malta Film Studios, located at St. Rocco Street, and morphed the captured sequences.

The production members then moved to the next shooting location and commenced the second phase of shooting. 

Mexico

After filming the majority of the sequences in Malta, filming stopped for a couple of weeks. Shortly after, the second phase of shooting started in Mexico. Major outdoor sequences of the movie were captured near Cabo San Lucas.

This resort city is located in the southernmost part of Baja California, Mexico. Apart from serving as one of the perfect exotic shooting locations in Mexico, Cabo San Lucas is also visited by a number of tourists from all parts of the globe.

Shooting in Mexico continued for several weeks, after which the production members moved to England and shot the remaining sequences of the movie in Shepperton Studios.
