The story of Funny Farm is set in New York and Vermont. Interestingly enough, Roy Hill thought of shooting the outdoor scenes around the same location from the beginning of this project.
Since the main motive of the director was to draw a stark contrast between city life and rural life, he thought it would be best to film in New York and Vermont. So in order to keep things fair and simple, the director thought of shooting the sequences of the city in and around New York.
However, Roy Hill still wasn’t sure about the ideal filming location to capture the sequences of the countryside. So after the first couple of shooting locations were selected in and around the city of New York, the production members were asked to search for additional filming locations.
By the final week of July 1987, the production members scouted the remaining shooting locations in Vermont and then waited for the director’s final approval. Before the end of July 1987, Roy Hill checked the filming locations in person and then asked the crew to start filming.
The principal photography of Funny Farm commenced in the final week of August 1987 and continued until the first week of November of the same year. The shooting process lasted for almost three months, and during this time, the production members captured the major scenes in Vermont.
However, the first phase of shooting commenced in New York, which was mainly used to capture the sequences of the first quarter of the film. Later the production members moved to other filming locations.

Other important outdoor scenes were filmed in Windsor and Grafton. The outdoor scenes where the lead actor appears to be fishing and doing other activities near the lake were filmed in Grafton.
Sequences from the final quarter of the movie were filmed in Townshend, Vermont. After all these outdoor scenes were shot, the production members moved to Richmond and captured the interior scenes.
