The story of Champions revolves around Marcus Marakovich, played by Woody Harrelson. Marcus is the assistant coach of a minor-league basketball team. He is a skilled basketball coach who knows how to train players, but his only drawback is that he is short-tempered and does not know how to control his anger.

During one of the games, Marcus loses his temper and shoves the head coach, Phil Pherretti. After leaving the game, he goes to a nearby pub where he gets drunk, and while driving back home, he bangs into a cop car and ends up in jail.

When he appears for the hearing, the Judge gives him two options: eighteen months in jail or three months of community service, where he has to train young basketball players with intellectual disabilities. He finally decides to train the players. At first, he was frustrated as the players were hard to manage, but eventually, he realized if he could be a little patient with them, then things could turn around.
