Not a lot of directors in Hollywood would refrain from filming internationally if they are presented with an opportunity to operate with a production budget north of $150 million. Thus, director Denis Villeneuve began scouting for picturesque filming spots overseas, after making minor adjustments to the script.
Soon, a bunch of international locations were scouted, out of which Spain and Hungary were finalized. However, the production later decided to add Iceland to the list of filming locations. The majority of the shooting took place in the capital of Hungary, and the remaining sequences were filmed in Spain and Iceland. The principal photography commenced in June 2016 and was completed in 4 months.
The tight international filming schedule left no room for errors, and thankfully the crew stayed on top of the filming dates. So without waiting any longer let’s discuss where was Blade Runner 2049 filmed in-depth and find out more about the specific shooting locations.

The production reached the beautiful city of Budapest to shoot the opening sequence of the film. The scene where we see the character of K entering a luxurious casino was actually filmed in Budapest. The production unit booked the Stock Exchange Palace, located in the downtown area of the capital city of Hungary for an entire week. The crew filmed several interiors and exterior sequences of the casino, after making minor changes to the inside decor, to make it look futuristic.
Other filming locations in Budapest included the Origo Film Studios. The production unit constructed a set inside this studio to depict the technologically advanced city shown in the film. The majority of the finances and efforts went into build this set, as the crew extensively captured most of the interior sequences in it.
An additional Hungarian studio, located in the village of Etyek was also booked by the unit. However filming here lasted for only a week or so, after which the unit moved to Spain and captured the remaining sequences.
Sevilla | Spain
The fourth-largest city in Spain is where the production arrived, after filming the majority of the pivotal scenes in Hungary. Although, some equally significant sequences were filmed in the city of Sevilla as well. Such as the aerial shots of the Solar City shown in the film, were captured here. The production unit used special cameras and other equipment to capture this wide-angled scene from a helicopter.
Other Filming Locations
Some more aerial shots were taken in Iceland to portray the establishing scenes. However these were not captured using a helicopter, the unit instead used special drones mounted with high-tech cameras to film the top view of the Solar City.
Now, if you’re planning to visit Spain this winter, then you can look into Majorca, Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Tenerife and Valencia which are often visited by tourists from different parts of the world.
