Even though the story of this movie is a continuation of its prequel, the sequences were shot in different locations. The director and the production members started looking for other filming locations in America.
The main filming locations in California, which were used in the other two films, were also used in this movie as well. However, to find other filming locations, the production members scouted several locations in America.
The majority of these sites were located near the desert in Arizona. The director wanted this type of background to capture some pivotal scenes in the movie. So, after the production members received the specific set of instructions from the director, they started the scouting process.
The filming crew kept looking for ideal shooting locations in and around the state of Arizona. By the first week of July 1989, all the filming locations were finalized. The principal photography of Back To The Future 3 began after one month.
The shooting process continued till the second week of January 1990. As I mentioned earlier, the majority of the outdoor scenes were captured in South Pasadena, Monrovia, and Los Angeles County.

The sequence depicting the Rolls Royce incident in the movie was shot outside of a commercial building near Doris Avenue & North Oxford Drive, Oxnard. The outdoor scenes of Dr. Emmett’s house, on the other hand, were filmed in a different location.
The production members selected a small-sized house located at 4 Westmoreland Place, Pasadena. After filming all these sequences, the production members moved to Arizona.

The second phase of the shooting began in the state of Arizona. The sequences from the final quarter of the movie were shot on the foothills of Monument Valley, Arizona. The scenes of the drive-in theater in the movie were filmed in this location,
