Where Was The Matrix Filmed? Know All The Sydney Based Locations!
The Matrix takes place in an unnamed city but we have already told you that all the filming took place in Australia because there were some budget constraints with the producers. The filming was on point and very well appreciated by critics. No one at that time knew that Keanu Reeves dodging a few bullets in slow motion would become a pop culture phenomenon. Anyhow, let’s discuss the major locations where The Matrix was filmed.
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, the largest and most populous city in Australia. The harbor city is popular for the famous Sydney Opera House which is also called an architectural masterpiece of the 20th century. Sydney is a perfect holiday destination where you can enjoy sandy beaches during the day and new rooftop bars and shopping avenues during the night.
Central Business District, Martin Place At Pitt Street, Sydney
The Matrix in the movie implies that it’s set in Chicago, but the metropolis city seen in the movie is Sydney, mostly around the central business district. The place where the phone box is seen in the movie when Carrie-Anne Moss escapes Agent Smith and disappears after making a call is Miller’s Point. Miller’s point is close to Sydney Harbour Bridge, which can also be seen in movies like Mission Impossible and Mechanic: Ressurection.
A round fountain is seen in the movie when Neo is in the training program area, and Morpheus explains to him about the matrix. This fountain is located in Martin Place at Pitt street, which is in the heart of Sydney’s main business district area.
The restaurant where we see Cypher and Agent Smith making a deal was an actual restaurant named Forty-One Restaurant at Chifley Square, close to the fountain. The restaurant is now closed. Also, previously an office building where Neo is ambushed by the agents and sees a black cat deja-vu signifying the glitch is now revamped into a hotel called Westin Hotel at Martin Place.
The government building where Morpheus is held captive is the Colonial State Bank Centre which is also at 52 Martin Place. The underground train station where we see Neo and Agent smith fighting was filmed on a rail track section of an old wheat storage facility at White Bay, located close to Anzac Bridge.
Fox Studio, Moore Park
The interior scenes were shot in the Fox Studio in Moore Park, Sydney. Since its inception in 1998, the studio has been a host to some of the biggest movies ever produced. The latest Marvel movie Thor: Love And Thunder was also produced here.
Other popular Sydney locations that can be seen in The Matrix are Aon Tower, AWA Building, and Allianz Building.
