Director Marc Forster and the production unit initially decided to shoot A Man Called Otto, in Canada, for tax purposes. The province of British Columbia offering a 33% filming tax credit, was primarily set to be the major location for shooting the film. However, later the production unit changed its decision and began to nurture the idea of filming in America.
Soon, the production unit began scouting for ideal shooting sites in America. After the filming budget was bumped up to $50 million, the production unit was not restrained anymore, to shoot in places with high tax returns. Instead, they focused on looking for locations with perfect backdrops that would enhance the overall story of the film. Subsequently, the state of Pennsylvania and Ohio was decided to be the final filming locations.
The majority of the filming of, A Man Called Otto, was done in and around the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The principal photography began in February 2022 and was completed by the end of May, this year.

The historical city of Pittsburgh was the first filming location that the production unit arrived at. Toledo, Brecksville | Ohio
Despite the fact that the production unit arrived in the city of Toledo after the completion of filming in Pennsylvania. The sequences which were filmed here can be seen appearing at the beginning of the film. The opening scene of the film was shot at Central Union Station in Toledo. In order to film the interior scenes of the station special permission had to be acquired from the filming unit.
The crew then moved about 100 miles southeast, from Toledo to the city of Brecksville. The final sequence of the movie was shot here. Exterior shots of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad were captured. Along with filming some other important scenes at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which featured the Cuyahoga River in the closing scene!

A Man Called Otto is inspired by a famous novel, and we do have some idea about the basic premise of the movie. The central character of the film, Otto, is a crabby man, who is on the brink of entering the stage of “senior citizenship”. Loses his dearly wed wife to a chronic disease. The feeling of bereavement almost drives Otto nuts, provoking him to think about all sorts of negative things.
